National Museum of American Jewish History

The only museum in the United States solely dedicated to the American Jewish experience, the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) is a place like no other. Established in 1976, NMAJH draws international attention to Philadelphia for its telling recreations of Jewish life in America, dating as far back as 1654. Since its inception, the museum, located on Independence Mall, has displayed more than 100 unique exhibitions, with over 25,000 Americana artifacts in its permanent collection.

The Core Exhibit

The museum’s core exhibition is 4 floors of Jewish American history in a series of time capsule narratives. Visitors see artifacts, enter period environments, and participate in interactive technology to truly experience over 450 years of migration.

Holiday Closings

In addition to every Monday, NMAJH is closed on the following holidays: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, and the first day of Passover. On these holidays, the museum closes at 3pm: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Erev Yom Kippur, and Christmas Eve.


  • Are there special or changing exhibits?

    There certainly are! Exhibits exploring different themes regularly rotate through the museum’s galleries, including some focused on individual artists, communities, and lesser-known periods in history. All together, NMAJH has hosted over 100 such exhibits since its founding in 1976.
  • What are the benefits of membership?

    Individual memberships cost $54, duals are $72. Unlimited museum admission is free for members, with a 10% discount in the Museum Store & Café. Members also receive a subscription to Only in America biannual newsletter, and a monthly E-Newsletter.
